Finish

Cue: Verbal cue "Heel."

Description: On cue, dog will move into perfect heel position.

Elements:

  • Behavior specifics: Find heel position from any other position -- even from a slightly crooked version of heel position. When I change my position, he should change with me.
  • Distance: Dog will respond to cue to find heel position from up to 20 feet away.
  • Latency: Immediate.
  • Position: Heel position described in the AKC regs.
  • Locations: Everywhere.
  • Distractions: Anything and everything. Especially distractions common in a dog show or performance environment.

Training Plan: (Accomplish each level in multiple locations of gradually increasing distractions.)

  1. Dog maintains eye contact through a counter-clockwise pivot.
  2. Shape finish.
  3. Perfect finish.
  4. Add cue to finish.
  5. Reduce latency.
