High Jump

Cue: Hand signal

Description: On signal, dog will go out over an indicated jump, retrieve a dumbbell, jump back over the same jump, and return to front.

Elements:

  • Behavior specifics: Jump height determined by AKC obedience standards.
  • Distance: Can send to a jump 20 feet away.
  • Latency: Immediate.
  • Position: Dogs position to handler determined by exercise description. Jump position, though speficially stated in the AKC regs, should not be limited to the stated angle or distance.
  • Locations: Everywhere.
  • Distractions: Anything and everything. Especially distractions common in a dog show or performance environment.
  • Other. Jumping (above 2" or so) won't begin until dog is at least 18 months old.

Training Plan: (Accomplish each level in multiple locations of gradually increasing distractions.)

  1. Shape a 2" jump between uprights.
  2. Shape a 2" jump from 10 feet away.
  3. Take indicated 2" jump from 10 feet away.
  4. Shape a 10' retrieve over a 2" jump.
  5. 20 foot retrieve over a 2" jump.
  6. 20 foot retrieve over a half-height jump.
